In a flashback, at the U.S. Naval Headquarters, the Navy picked the aeronautics design of the young Terry Sloane over hundreds of others, which can be attributed to Terry's genius intellect. An officer reviewed Terry's plans with him. The officer left with the plans and was ambushed by two men in suits. Terry rushed out and beat up the two attackers, who were later arrested. Throughout his life, due to his level of intelligence, Terry Sloane would have no friends, excel at chess, skip twelve grades from kindergarten to college, only to receive an honorary degree after one year, and win five events in one day. When he became an adult, he was placed in charge of the largest plant of a company. As Terry continued to succeed at everything, he felt jaded. He was driving on a bridge, considering killing himself, when he saw a woman jump off into water. He followed her into the water and saved her and she revealed her name as Wanda Wilson. Wanda explained to Terry that she jumped off because her brother Billie had joined a gangster named Big Shot. Later, Terry dressed up in a costume and appeared at the Purple Dagger Club, drawing away boys from Big Shot. Then, Terry found Big Shot's headquarters and beat him and his goons up as the boys watched. Then, Terry attempted to prove that he was smarter than Big Shot by making him solve a math equation, which the gangster failed to do. Terry, who refused to tell the boys his real name, was nicknamed Mister Terrific by them. The next day, the boys formed the Fair Play Club with Mister Terrific. In Terry's office, Wanda thanked him for what he did for Billie. THE ORIGIN OF THE GAY GHOST In the year 1700, Keith Everet, the Earl of Strethmere, rode into town and came upon thugs, who killed him with a gunshot. His lover Deborah Wallace came upon him, moments before he died. After he died, he became a ghost and was unnoticeable by his lover. Eighty years later, Deborah was long dead and his ancestors appeared in front of him and granted him the chance to return to Earth, in exchange for bringing justice. He was told to wait for Deborah and returned to the castle to wait there, waiting for centuries, in the painting of his past life. In Ireland, in 1941, Charles Collins came with Deborah Wallace, the descendant of Keith Everet's fiancée of the same name. The two entered Castle Connaught and saw the ghost of Keith Everet come out from the painting. Spies had also entered the castle and killed Charles with a gunshot. Keith entered Charles' body and beat up the spies. As he returned to Deborah, one of the spies got up and aimed his gun at them, only to be thrown aside. Then, Keith took the form of himself from the painting again, dubbing himself, "the Gay Ghost" and taking care of the last spy, taking plans from him, dropping him in the Irish Sea, and returning them to the British military. The Gay Ghost returned to the castle, into Charles' body, before leaving with Deborah and the painting of his past life. However, he wanted to become a doctor, but when his parents died, everything changed for him, so he went to New York City to look for a job, with little luck. He saw two men beating up another man and intervened, chasing the two attackers away. A man named Socker Smith, who was a heavyweight champion approached him and hired him to be one of his sparring partners. Ted met Smitty's managers, Flint and Skinner, who helped him become a professional boxer. During his boxing career, Ted would have many wins. One day, Smitty introduced Ted to his fiancée Joan Fortune. Later on, Flint and Skinner arranged a fight between Ted and Smitty. Also during the fight, Flint had a needle slipped into Ted's glove, resulting in Smitty's death. Ted won the fight and the needle was discovered in his glove and he was arrested for murder. The needle was actually placed to knock Smitty unconscious, but accidentally killed him, so Flint decided to send men to attack the police car carrying Ted, knocking it off of a gorge. Fortunately, Ted survived and escaped. He came upon a boy whose Green Lantern comic was stolen by a man; this gave Ted an idea. Ted gave the boy money to buy new comics before he suited up in a costume and attacked the people who had set him up, forcing confessions out of them. The next day, Ted was found innocent and dubbed himself as Wildcat.
