Martian Manhunter walks across the barren desert of Mars with H'ronmeer. Now free of his fever, H'ronmeer shared with J'onn J'onzz the true history of Mars. Jonn sees the Martian race evolve from a species of bird. The Martians evolve into a pacifist society, creating wondrous architecture. However, a plague hits the Martian race, and J'onn's wife is one of the Martians that succumbs. In order to purge the plague, the Martians create huge funeral pyres to incinerate the contaminated bodies. J'onn watches the memory of his wife burning in the pyre. Back on Earth, the Justice League have caught up with Dr. Erdel, who convinces them to wait for J'onn's return patiently. J'onn connects with the ghosts of Martians long gone, including his daughter. His daughter pleads with him to let go of the pain, and to find a new life on Earth. J'onn agrees, and telepathically asks Dr. Erdel to bring him home. J'onn returns to meet the JLI in his new form, and explains to them some of what he has found. The team returns to the JLI Embassy, where J'onn finds peace with his ghosts.
