Still in the clutches of fever, J'onn lands on the doorstep of Dr. Erdel: the scientist that brought the Martian Manhunter from Mars to Earth. However, Dr. Erdel was thought to have died shortly after bringing J'onn to Earth. Before J'onn can question Erdel, H'ronmeer, the Martian god of fire and death, appears. Martian Manhunter's fever visions show him his father, the great Martian warrior. However, other memories intrude. Instead of his father's voice, J'onn hears a young female voice call out... calling him father. Wracked with fever, and confusion, J'onn expunges his Martian Breath, blasting back H'ronmeer and destroying Erdel's house. Before Erdel is hurt by falling debris, he is rescued by an unfamiliar green creature, who reveals himself to be Martian Manhunter. J'onn realizes that, up until that point, his entire life has been a lie. He was not a great warrior on the sands of Mars. Instead, J'onn was a poet, and had a wife and a daughter, both of which died shortly before coming to Earth. In his grief, J'onn now realizes that he constructed his fake past from telepathically inspired Edgar Rice Burroughs novels. Martian Manhunter helps Erdel recreate Erdel's teleportation machine, and the two use it to teleport J'onn back to Mars for a final confrontation with H'ronmeer.
