Hawkman and Hawkgirl encounter six Wingors from Illoral over Australia, brought through a dimensional warp by the machinations of Ruthvol, high priest of a lost Earth city called Quaranda. He means to sacrifice them to his god Involos in order to usurp the rule of his queen, Thais Tal. Tal manages to prevent this, but cannot prevent Katar from disappearing, and he winds up on Illoral in time to save his friends Dwyanna Ral and Ambarr from the Moth-Men, slavers of their race from an ancient time, thought extinct until their reappearance. Hawkman deduces that the same warp through which he and the Wingors had passed was responsible, triggered by solar energy reflected by Earth's moon. Through this opening, Quarandans have sacrificed offerings to their invisible "god." He bests the Moth-Men by upsetting their flying senses with huge flames, then re-enters the dimensional warp armed with the Mutagens Control machine, to devolve the Wingors on Earth. As he arrives, Hawkgirl and Thais Tal are about to be sacrificed through the warp, so he must save them before activating the machine. He does so by maneuvering a gorilla to do it for him. The winged apes turn humanoid just as Hawkgirl wakes to attack Ruthvol, who goes through the warp in her stead, followed by the Wingors. Thais Tal then destroys all instructions for summoning the "god," and as Hawkman and Hawkgirl leave Quaranda, they see it disappear like a desert mirage.
