Synopsis

Cutter wriggles loose from his bonds, and using his acute sense of smell, follows his nose to New Moon, his sword. It's been dropped into a crevice. As he ponders HOW to get it out, the lodesone's magnetic property attaches itself to the sword. At the same time, Rayek uses a handy sharp rock to cut his bonds, and uses his tracking skill to see where his fellow SunFolk have hidden his golden blade. He finds it in a similar crevice and uses his necklace to pull it out and returns to the village, certain that the barbarian Cutter has lost to find the WolfRider waiting for him. He cries foul, that using the lodestone was magic, but Savah overrules him and Cutter is declared winner of the trial of Hand and Head. Next, comes the trial of Heart. He's to walk across the Bridge of Destiny, touch the sun design at its end and return. He ventures out onto the Bridge, but collapses with fear. A boastful Rayek struts out onto the Bridge to show how HE's not afraid of heights, but is nearly blown off the bridge, catching hold with bloody fingers, dangling above a death-fall. Cutter's protective instincts kick in and, despite his fear, he ventures back onto the Bridge and pulls Rayek to safety. Rayek leaves in a huff as Cutter clings to the Bridge in fear. Savah explains that Rayek has lost as his fear was a fear of losing and his Pride has been his downfall. As the tribes wait, Cutter assimilates his hear, stands, walks to the end of the Bridge, touches the sun-symbol, and returns. Wins his trial of Heart, and is again put down by Leetah who reiterates that he has won the right to WOO her. He states his confusion of why woo...
