He saves Don Mercante from a hit and uses this leverage to get Mercante to supply him with information. Mercante, however, hires an assassin - Mekros - to take out both a criminal rival and the Batman. Unfortunately for him, Batman cottons on to this and the bullet meant for him kills Don Mercante instead. Continues in Batman #502 -- Phoenix in Chaos
