THE FIRST DAY OF THE REST OF YOUR LIFE Its New Year's Day and Jean-Paul Valley is thinking about the past and asks himself what he will do now that No Man's Land is no more. Coming around a corner, Jean-Paul has to scare away some men who are beating on a helpless man. To Jean-Paul's surprise this man is his old friend Brian Bryan. Because Brian knows much about medicine Jean-Paul is throwing around the idea to open a free clinic in an old church. Dr. Leslie Thompkins is very fond of the idea and thinks that Bruce Wayne might finance it like he does her clinic. Later, Jean-Paul meets with Batman who tells him that he already has purchased the old church. But Batman also hopes that Jean-Paul continues to support him as Azrael, especially if help is necessary outside of Gotham City. Jean-Paul agrees, but he knows Batman is using him and he does not like it. As Jean-Paul gets back to the church, he has to put on his costume because the men who attacked Brian are back again. They want to punish him because he had left Gotham after the earthquake. Azrael not only stops the men, but also convinces them to return the next day to clean up the church. Surprisingly, the men really follow his orders, but there is another man also looking for shelter. And Azrael knows him all too well ...
