Atrocitus was created by writer Geoff Johns and artist Ethan Van Sciver as part of the Green Lantern mythos, representing the embodiment of rage.

Atrocitus was one of the five surviving members of the planet Ryut, who were tortured by the Guardians of the Universe. His rage led him to become the first Red Lantern.
